What Is Armed Forces Day?

Truman established it to consolidate the separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force Days into a single celebration. The first Armed Forces Day was celebrated on May 20, 1950, to honor Americans serving in the U.S. Military branches under the Department of Defense. Since then, the day has been an annual opportunity for civilians to express their gratitude and support for the men and women who serve.

When Is Armed Forces Day?

Armed Forces Day is typically celebrated on the third Saturday in May each year in the United States. The exact date of Armed Forces Day can vary from year to year, but it usually falls between May 15th and May 21st. Armed Forces Day in 2024 is May 18th.

Memorial Day vs Veterans Day vs Armed Forces Day

Memorial Day

Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday in May each year. The purpose of Memorial Day is to remember, honor, and mourn the military personnel who have died in the line of duty while serving in the United States Armed Forces. It originated after the Civil War to commemorate Union and Confederate soldiers who died in battle, and it has since expanded to honor all American service members who made the ultimate sacrifice. 

Veterans Day

Veterans Day is observed every year on November 11th, and it honors all military veterans who have served in peacetime or wartime and thank them for their service and sacrifice. It used to be called Armistice Day and commemorated the end of World War I on November 11th, 1918.

Armed Forces Day

Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday of May. This day honors all men and women currently serving in the United States Armed Forces. It recognizes the collective strength and commitment of the military across all branches and provides an opportunity for civilians to express their appreciation for service members.

The Difference Between Each Day

Memorial Day honors those who have died during their military service. Veterans Day honors all military service men and women no longer serving. And Armed Forces Day celebrates those currently serving in the United States Armed Forces.
