Brazil Tradition Highlight: Japanese Influences

Japanese Cuisine in Brazil

When most outsiders think of Brazil, Japanese cuisine is not likely the first thing that comes to mind. But Brazil is home to over 1.4 million individuals of Japanese descent-the largest population outside of Japan itself.

Influence of Japanese cuisine in Brazil

Unsurprisingly, Japanese cuisine features prominently in the food scene of Brazil. It is especially popular in São Paulo, which claims the largest number of Japanese Brazilians in the country. There are over 500 Japanese restaurants in São Paulo and, of its nine Michelin-rated restaurants, five are Japanese.

Japanese Brazilian Origins

The presence of Japanese cuisine in Brazil dates back to 1907 when the first immigrants were recruited to work on coffee farms. The Japanese were enticed with the promise of making their fortunes and then being able to return home.

This promise was hard kept, however, with realities like poor crop yields and a looming World War making the voyage home impossible. The thousands of Japanese immigrants who remained had to make do with a vastly different culture, language, food, and climate.

At first, familiar favorites were difficult to find or too expensive to enjoy. Rice was replaced with cassava and cornmeal, while traditional fruits and vegetables were substituted with papaya and other local commodities.

Eventually, Japanese immigrants began to cultivate and manufacture their preferred ingredients while simultaneously introducing various traditional cooking techniques to the rest of the country. By the 1990s, Japanese cuisine had become a national favorite, touted for its balanced taste and health benefits.

Japanese Brazilian Food

While Japanese food in Brazil features familiar items like sushi and sashimi, tempura, and sticky rice, there are a few dishes that are unique to Brazil. As with any cuisine, it has been adapted to suit the various tastes and cultures found in an incredibly diverse area.

A popular installment in Sao Paulo, for example, is the Temakeria. This is a Japanese spin on the taqueria. Instead of tacos, temakerias serve temaki: cone shaped sushi rolls that can easily be consumed while walking. Brazilians love their street food, and this concept of “sushi-on-the-go” is a perfect example of how cuisine evolves with local preferences.

Another unique Brazilian spin on Japanese classics is the “hot roll.” Traditional maki rolls are breaded and fried for a crispy, crunchy outside.

Japan’s Legacy in Brazil

Japanese cuisine is symbolic of the lasting impact of Japan’s immigration to Brazil. The farming techniques used by the first immigrants to grow foods from home are still in use today and have shaped Brazil’s reputation as an agricultural powerhouse.

But cuisine is only part of the Japanese Brazilian identity. Descendants of the first coffee laborers represent all aspects of Brazilian culture: art, architecture, music, religion, dance, athletics, and more. Millions of Brazilians claim Japanese heritage, and it is central to the country’s identity as a whole.

Texas de Brazil Presents A Quarter-Million Dollar Donation To St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®

Dallas, TX – November 11, 2019–

The numbers are in! After tallying funds raised during Texas de Brazil’s national, one-month campaign and a finale charity luncheon, the corporate match commitment of $25,000 was boosted to over $29,000 to allow the Brazilian-American steakhouse group to present $250,000 to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® team members. The donation was announced at the luncheon held in Texas de Brazil Dallas on October 26th. This brings the grand total donations raised for St. Jude through Texas de Brazil to over $791,000 since the annual campaign began in 2013.

“We are honored to be able to surpass the donations we’ve previously presented and thank our generous guests throughout the nation for joining us in supporting this important organization,” says Salim Asrawi, president and chief operating officer for the family-owned Brazilian steakhouse brand. “St. Jude is leading the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases and we are proud to support their efforts.”

Throughout August, Texas de Brazil partnered with St. Jude in a campaign that allowed guests to donate directly to the cause at the bottom of guest checks. No purchase was required, and for every $5 donated Texas de Brazil provided a $5 bounce-back certificate as incentive and on Mondays, doubled incentives up to $50. Monies raised through Texas de Brazil social media platforms, the finale luncheon sales and silent auction items donated by vendors and hospitality associates, plus Texas de Brazil’s $25,000 match boosted by nearly $4500 to allow the restaurant group to donate a quarter-million dollars to support St. Jude in its life-saving mission: Finding cures. Saving children.®

Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20 percent when the hospital opened in 1962 to more than 80 percent today, and they won’t stop until no child dies from cancer. Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food – because all a family should worry about is helping their child live. St. Jude freely shares the discoveries it makes, and every child saved at St. Jude means doctors and scientists worldwide can use that knowledge to save thousands more children.

When ready for the main course, guests flip a two-sided disc located at each seat from red to green, and gauchos (servers) begin to carve tableside a selection of meats grilled to perfection over natural wood charcoal – a tradition passed down through generations of gauchos from Southern Brazil. The slow-roasted meats include Brazilian picanha (sirloin), lamb chops, filet mignon, leg of lamb, Parmesan-crusted pork loin, bacon wrapped chicken breast and more. When a break is needed in the unending flow of mouthwatering meats, guests simply turn their disc back to red. This unique style of dining helps guests fit Texas de Brazil into any timeframe – from leisurely meals with friends and family or efficient visits with business associates.
